Dependents and Family Members - UK
Eligibility for Bringing Dependents
- Students on Tier 4 (General) Visas: If you hold a Tier 4 (General) student visa, you may be eligible to bring dependents (spouse and children) to the UK if you meet certain criteria.
- Financial Requirements: You must demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to support your dependents without relying on public funds. This typically involves proving that you have a specific amount of money above what is needed for your own maintenance and studies.
Visa Application Process for Dependents
- Separate Visa Applications: Each dependent must apply for a visa separately. They will generally apply for a "Dependent Visa" under the Tier 4 category.
Required Documents:
- Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates for children)
- Proof of the student’s enrollment in a UK educational institution
- Proof of financial means
- Evidence of accommodation arrangements for the family
- Tuberculosis test results (if applicable)
Residence Permits
- After Arrival: Once in the UK, dependents will be granted a visa that allows them to stay for the duration of the student's course plus any additional time. They do not need to apply for a separate residence permit but must adhere to visa conditions.
Work Rights for Dependents
- Spouse's Right to Work: Spouses of Tier 4 students are generally allowed to work full-time in the UK.
Schooling for Children
- Access to Education: Children of students are entitled to attend public schools in the UK. You will need to enroll them in a local school.
- Language Support: Many schools offer English language support for non-English-speaking children.
Healthcare
- Health Insurance: Dependents must have health coverage. They will have access to the National Health Service (NHS) as part of their visa conditions, but may need to pay the immigration health surcharge as part of their visa application.
Legal Considerations
- Legal Stay: Dependents must comply with UK immigration laws, including maintaining valid visas and abiding by any visa conditions during their stay.
